New Student Orientation Welcomes Students
By: Karam

New students, new parents, counselors, principals, and ambassadors gathered in Drama Den and HOP on August 6, 2010 for a new student orientation.

This orientation was planned so new students would feel comfortable and know a little bit more about the places and people of AES. A new student orientation happens every year, always on the Friday before school starts, so the new students can come back on the weekend to buy school supplies.

During the orientation, the ambassadors took the new students on a tour of the school while the parents stayed in the HOP with the principals and the counselors, learning about how the Middle School was different from the Elementary School, and they learned about Skyward.

“I think the orientation went well because the new students seemed to know where everything was and who they were going to be at AES, thanks to the ambassadors,” Dr. Sirotin recalls.

Overall, the new students were interested and excited about their new school.

“Well, I found the new student orientation organized. Since this is my first year as an ambassador, it gave me some ideas about how I should act like, or what I should do. It really helped set up my life as an ambassador!” 7th grade ambassador Anna K happily says. “I talked to the new students when I saw them sit around alone after school started. I asked them how their school life was going. I introduced them to other friends of mine, so the new students felt more comfortable in this school,”

The ambassadors and the new students got to know each other by having pizza together in the Drama Den during the orientation.
“Have you hugged an Ambassador today? You should! We have so many new students each year, but our fabulous Ambassadors are here to make sure the "newbies" are not lost or lonely. The reports I am getting are very positive,” Mr. Perkins says.

The new student orientation was just one of the many events that ambassadors help out at and they always do a great job!

Nik Raj, a new student to AES, seemed to enjoy the orientation. “I found the orientation helpful because I learned my way around school and got to meet other new kids and kids who knew the school. I also made friends with my ambassador.”

The orientation seemed to please new students and helped them learn about their new school and peers.
